EQUIPMENT

Equipment is important in gathering information on a location that could hold paranormal activity. Other than eye witness accounts, using equipment can help prove that something out of the norm is happening. One good thing to remember is that before you use any piece of equipment get to know how it works and how to use it properly. Some of these tools listed supposedly have picked up anomalous behaviors in haunted locations but they have yet to proven out as a solid device when capturing something paranormal.
OTHER THAN A GOOD SENSE OF JUDGEMENT, YOU WILL FIND TOOLS THAT ARE COMMONLY IN A PARANORMAL RESEARCHERS TOOL BOX. This does not mean that MAGIC has all tools/devices or believes that all tools are effective when doing this type of research. We do use other tools that you will not find listed below.

GOOD SENSE OF JUDGEMENT- This is the key factor when doing any type of investigating or research. Whether you are a forensic scientist, psychologist, or any other type of scientist, the same rules apply to paranormal investigating. MAGIC feels there is a common basis of "guidelines" that should be followed when conducting any type of research. The objective is to observe, study, conduct experiments and try to eliminate or debunk any"so called evidence." This field is still not recognized as an actual science. We as investigators need to have a level head on our shoulders, follow strict protocol, and be educated in different aspects of paranormal investigating to insure that what we actually present as paranormal, has no other known cause.
CAMERAS are crucial in gathering evidence that we can see.35mm cameras are mostly recommended with 800 speed black and white film. Allot of people disagree on using digital while others recommend it. Digital pictures can easily be downloaded for instant view. Digital cameras can still be used but it is recommended to have a regular camera also. There is a program out there that can determine all information about a digital picture. It can tell you if it has been tampered with and even if a flash was used. This data is called EXIF data. Video (dig. or reg.) cameras can document Allot while on an investigation. From interviews right down to the readings on the other equipment that you use. But most hope to see anomalous behaviors. I do recommend that you get a video camera that has night shot, that way while out on your night adventures you can capture everything, even what your eyes don't see.   Wireless Cameras are also used. We recommend using hard wire so there is no interference with the recordings. You can use a home security camera kit that comes with all the necessities that you will need to include software with split screens.   Thermal Imaging Cameras have been being used to investigate the paranormal. Though we have talked to many investigators that have used them in their field of study, they have yet to pick up anything of paranormal origin. We do see these used on TV programs to capture paranormal activity but the evidence gathered has yet to be backed up by another sort of basic video being used. These types of cameras are hefty in price and we do not recommend going out and purchasing one because the have yet to be conclusive in finding paranormal activity.
IR Illuminators are crucial for those night investigations. This little device allows any type of camera to see in the darkness. It is recommended to use these to get a clearer picture.
THERMAL SCANNERS are hand held devices that you can point at an area/object and get a temperature reading. This device gives you an instant reading and can help you help in tracking down cold spots or drafts that can help rule out paranormal activity.
HAND HELD VOICE RECORDER this is used to pick up sounds or voices that you might not hear known as Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP). There are two basic types or recorders the regular cassette or digital as pictured. Any type of recorder will do but keep in mind the quality of sound it will record or pick up. Some say that it is more practical to find one that can hold a long length of audio then one where you would have to keep changing the tapes or memory card. The one pictured can hold an amazing 44 hours worth of sound. Our group typically uses analog recorders rather than digital.
COMPASS is a good tool and has been used for may years in paranormal investigations. According to researchers a compass will spin in a circular motion when something paranormal is present.
HYDRO/THERMOMETER is good for a few things .Humidity can be detected in any environment outdoors or indoors.This can help rule out possibilities of moisture that might be captured on camera. Temperature readings are also helpful in determining ghostly presences and/or helping in determining authentic photographs.
EMF DETECTOR(ELECTROMAGNETIC FEILD DECTECTORS) Helps in finding electric fields that can be around ones home or place of business. It has been assumed that this type of equipment can pick up something paranormal. You have to learn what the readings mean on this piece of equipment because you wouldn't want to pick up something like a power line, transformer, etc outside or when inside an outlet,electrical wires that are in walls or anything of that sort. Practice and time is the key to proper use of this device.
GAUSSMETERS, sometimes called Tesla meters, Flux Density Meters or (incorrectly) Flux meters, use a sensor to measure magnetic flux density . Magnetic Field Strength in air can also be measured. This tool is sometimes used in determining the strength of the magnetic field. Some researchers say that this is a good tool in tracking paranormal behavior.
GEIGER COUNTER is another device that has been used for along time in ghost hunting. It is said that this device picks up any type of radiation.This device measures Alpha, Beta, Gamma and X-ray radiation. Supposedly ghosts can produce anomalies in radiation that a geiger counter can pick up. But the instrument's original purpose was to search primarily for nuclear radiation.
BASIC THINGS THAT YOU SHOULD HAVE ON ANY INVESTIGATION FLASHLIGHT FIRST AID KIT PENS / PAPER EXTRA BATTERIES COMFORTABLE CLOTHING TAPE MEASURE EXTRA TAPES (video/ audio) **Although the Equipment above is recommended in researching ghostly phenomena not all the equipment is necessary in finding authentic paranormal behavior.
